What is the difference between Internet and Intranet?

Many people would like to know the difference between the Internet and Intranet. This question can be partially answered by looking the each of the words' prefixes; inter means between and intra means within.
There’s one major distinction between an intranet and the Internet: The Internet is an open, public space, while an intranet is designed to be a private space,  usually within a business.

Another difference between the two is that you may access an intranet from the Internet, but not the other way around. Also, an intranet is much faster as it doesn't rely on data from around the world because its data is stored locally on the company's servers.

Internet

1. Internet is wide network of computers and is open for all.
2. Internet itself contains a large number of intranets.
3. The number of users who use internet is Unlimited.
4. The Visitors traffic is unlimited.
5. Internet contains different source of information and is available for all.

Intranet

1. Intranet is also a network of computers designed for a specific group of users.
2. Intranet can be accessed from Internet but with restrictions.
3. The number of users is limited.
4. The traffic allowed is also limited.
5. Intranet contains only specific group information.

Similarities in Internet and Intranet

• Intranet uses the internet protocols such as TCP/IP and FTP.
• Intranet sites are accessible via web browser in similar way as websites in Internet. But only members of Intranet network can access intranet hosted sites.
• In Intranet, own instant messengers can be used as similar to yahoo messenger/ gtalk over the internet.

Differences in Internet and Intranet

• Internet is general to PCs all over the world whereas Intranet is specific to few PCs.
• Internet has wider access and provides a better access to websites to large population whereas Intranet is restricted.
• Internet is not as safe as Intranet as Intranet can be safely privatized as per the need.
